LEIA Distance Learning

The LEIA Distance Learning Course is a programme of study which aims to extend knowledge of lift and escalator engineering. It has been designed by, and for, the lift and escalator industry, growing over many years to include not only general lift technology, but also specialist units covering hydraulic lifts, escalators, electronic control, safety and contract management.

The course was set up in 1983 to address the difficulties created by a lack of lift technology courses, a highly mobile workforce and the demands of changing British and European standards requirements. Since the first intake of 308 students, the course has grown in popularity and to date has seen enrolments ranging between 350 to 400 students per year. The majority of students are based in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, but the course also attracts students from all over the world including Australia, New Zealand, China, Philippines, Greece, Canada and Finland.

The course is for anyone who wishes to study lift technology, from an apprentice unable to attend an appropriate college to someone with experience of the industry who wishes to update or improve their knowledge. Directors, managers, improvers, mates, fitters, testers, draughtsmen, clerks, typists, sales people and apprentices have all taken the LEIA Distance Learning Course in Lift Technology.

Partnerships for learning

The success of Distance Learning is very dependent on all the people involved working together in partnership.. The LEIA Distance Learning Course comprises four partners, shown below with the contribution expected of each.
