Safe & Sound - Escalator Safety
A campaign is launched by LEIA to promote the safe use of escalators and moving walks by the production of informative cards and posters explaining the rules when using this equipment. The information is aimed at young children who need to learn the few basic rules when travelling on escalators and moving walks. Two characters have been created “Safe & Sound” to help get the message across. It is hoped that owners of escalators and moving walks will support this initiative by contacting the Association for more information.
Escalators and moving walks offer a safe and efficient means of transporting large numbers of pedestrians between two floors when used correctly. They are designed for pedestrian passengers only not for any other purpose, such as transporting bulky items, wheelchairs or pushchairs. Lifts must be provided for such purposes and for mobility impaired passengers. Signage with directions to the nearest elevator must be provided near the entrance areas of the escalators and moving walks.
Escalators and moving walks are not a children’s playground! Do not allow misuse as this may result in serious injury. Typical examples include:
- Playing with the combplates and handrail inlets
- Sitting or “surfing” on the handrails
- Walking on the outer deckings
- Skateboarding, cycling or rollerblading etc.
By training staff to intervene when they see misuse occurring, a serious accident may be avoided.
