LEIA, together with other major trade associations in the UK construction industry, is supporting the Specialist Engineering Contractors’ (SEC) Group General Election campaign on the damaging impact of payment abuse on building quality and mental health.

SEC Group is launching a major campaign during the General Election to obtain a commitment from all parliamentary candidates to support legislation to:

  1. Mandate 30-day payment terms on all public sector contracts and sub-contracts
  2. Impose penalties on serial late payers
  3. Legislate for the use of project bank accounts in public sector construction/infrastructure projects (to ensure that all firms receive their payments directly without payments having to pass through different layers of contracting)
  4. Legislate to protect cash retentions in a secure account for firms in constructions supply chains

SEC Group argues that the next Government must upscale its efforts to stop payment abuse which results in broken buildings and broken lives.
