**Distance learning enrolment cut-off dates**

What does it offer?

The LEIA Distance Learning Course provides a technical training programme of study which aims to extend the candidate’s knowledge of lift and escalator engineering. It has been designed by, and for, the lift and escalator industry to address the difficulties created by a highly mobile workforce and the demands of changing British and European standards requirements.

The course is divided into Full and Half units of study. The full units cover engineering principles, lift technology, electric traction lifts and hydraulic lifts. The half units cover lift and escalator technology, safety and commercial management.

What study route should I take?

  • Most students start with the Introduction to Lift Technology followed by Fundamentals of Lift Technology.
  • Students working only on escalators or passenger conveyors usually go straight to the escalator and passenger conveyor unit.
  • Those who have completed the Introduction to Lift Technology followed by Fundamentals of Lift Technology will often go on to the advanced units.
  • Those involved with contractual issues and/or site work may choose to undertake the Practical Management of a Lift/Escalator Contract Part 1 Commercial, Practical Management of a Lift/Escalator Contract Part 2 Site or Managing Safety.

When do your courses start?

There are three starts within the year; January, May and September.
Any unit can be started at these times (Half and Full). Units must be completed in a set time (see Study Timetables below).

What are the technical requirements?

The candidate MUST have an accessible e-mail address – where possible, all communication will be via this means.
You will need a computer with Adobe Reader v9 or higher.
Internet access when undertaking the Computer Marked Assignments.

What does it cost?

Our courses start from £292 for LEIA members and from £484 for non-members. Full price lists for 2025

What next?

  • Decide which unit you intend to study – this decision may include discussing the course with your company contact or company mentor.
  • Establish who will pay for the course – payment covers all learning materials, registration, assessment, reporting and certification.
  • Complete a LEIA Candidate Registration Form and pass it to your company contact – if you are having a problem in identifying a company contact us, we may be able to help you.
  • Once the registration form has been authorised, your company contact should pass this along with any others, to LEIA.
  • LEIA will register you with the assessment website and will send your course materials including login details for the assessment website.
  • All course materials will be sent to you approximately two weeks before the course starts. If you have not received your course material by the first week in the month that your course starts, notify your company contact.

Important: Registration is only accepted for the next semester start. Only registration forms for the next semester will be accepted.
Completed registration forms must be submitted two weeks before semester start at the latest.

The LEIA Distance Learning Course follows the Policies and Procedures as defined by the LEIA Educational Trust.
